The semester is finally over! Sigh, the life of a student unwittingly boils down to this...countless deadlines and finals, a sigh of relief, short-lived freedom and then the cycle repeats again. It's like deja vu all the time. Well, I got bored studying after awhile and goofed around with my camera.
One of the greatest munchies around. Super yummy with bittersweet coffee. I love Trader Joe's to the max! That's one of the only quality places I can shop without breaking the bank at Manhattan.
Nerd at work.
Right after my finals, I joined the rest of the girls at Hoboken where Em is currently staying. Although Hoboken is technically located in New Jersey, Hoboken is often known as the honorary New York borough because it's packed with Yuppies who spend most of their waking hours across the Hudson river anyway. It is also the home of the legendary Frank Sinatra as well as the more recent's Harold and Kumar. Hoboken has a really homey and chill culture, which I absolutely love. Too bad the rent is as sky high as Manhattan's.
Em, the host who is currently interning at a fashion company in NYC. She's paying peanuts for an entire space to herself - upstairs, downstairs, spacious master bedroom, walk-in closet and awesome backyard (who the hell has their own backyard here!)
Tip for those who wanna visit NYC - Instead of looking at pricey hotels, you can save loads of money by subleasing apartments/houses. Many students and residents go out-of-town during the summer and they usually sublease their homes for a much cheaper price. This is especially great if you are staying in the city for a week or more. Imagine the extra money you could save to spend on shopping later. :)
Smells awesome. Assam fish cooking in the pot.
Our feast - I still can't believe we wiped out everything.
We yakked in bed all night long and woke up the next day just in time for lunch. Since Hoboken was predominantly Italian some time ago, many local business were owned by Italians. Fiore's deli is very well-known among the community for their fresh mozzarella cheese and yummy sandwiches. I know a few New Yorkers who would travel all the way to Hoboken to satisfy their mozzarella cravings.
When we approached the store from a block away, there was a huge red firetruck parked in front, with flashing lights and everything. We thought that something had happened and I was secretly afraid that the store was closed because of drama or something (we walked more than 12 blocks for this!). Just then, I saw a guy in a firefighter uniform step out of the deli with a humongous and heavy-looking brown lunch bag. Apparently, this was their lunch stop too. That's when we saw the long line snaking around in the shop.
Smells of heaven.
We then brought our brown lunch bags to a nearby park.
The special of the day was: Thinly sliced juicy roast beef served with mozzarella cheese and Italian bread dunked in brown gravy. It was good, though I still much preferred....
Ham and prosciutto with mozza. Great combo. Love the salty and chewy strips of prosciutto, the earthy tones of the ham helps to take the burst of flavor down a notch.
Mozzarella+cherry tomatoes+basil+olive oil+salt= :) Nothing can beat freshly made Mozza. The guys cautioned us to NOT put the cheese in the fridge until the next day, just cause it was so fresh.
We were devouring our lunches under the tree when I felt something drop on my head. Thinking it was bird poo, I leaped off my feet and cause a commotion. Well, it turned out that the birds in the tree were eating their lunches too. We got pelted on with these fruit thingys throughout lunch until Cheryl eventually got crapped on.
A dog run in the park. Playground for dogs.
Go play!
Next stop:
I used to watch Cake Boss in action on the silver screen. Although I've passed by the shop countless, I've never walked inside. So, we decided to give it a try.
This pic was taken last winter when I was at Hoboken. Check out the line! This time, the line became so unmanageable (neighboring businesses were complaining about the crowd) that the peeps at the bakery devised a plan: to line up at the NEXT building, and then a guy with a walkie talkie will send people to another line at the storefront. The line was rumored to take 2 hours. Errr.....OK, NEXT STOP.
Suntanning at the park with downtown Manhattan in the background.
If you look closely, you can see where the twin towers were. The freshly constructed One World Trade Center had taken its place (the tallest, darkest building emerging from the center).
Makan Round 2.
